say CHEESE!
Advertisements have a great way of portraying prducts to look good. Some of them are very persuasive and some are not. In this particular advertisement we see that it portrays cheese as being an American thing to eat. Which in fact I believe cheese has had a great affect on us as well as other dairy products have too. It is something that we have come to value and love. The fact that we have access to such a great product that tastes so great, it has become more of a want than a need. We as Americans, have become one of the unhealthiest nations because of the excessive amounts of foods we have access to. We take things for granted and consume so much of certain products without thinking of the health factors behind it. It is something that our nation has widely ignored. Food advertisements are not going to give us much health factors either. But even if they did, many of us still do not care and eat these products because that is how we have been raised. It is the “American” thing to do. We also must admit that because of the awesome taste some of these products provide, it is why we ignore these factors.
Some of these foods just become addictions. Even if we know they are bad for our health, we still eat these products because of the great taste satisfaction they provide us. My addiction is cheese. For this reason Ichosed this ad to write about. I love cheese! I always have to have cheese in almost everything I eat. I like cheese in enchiladas, tortas, salads, pasta, lasagña, tacos, potatoes and beans. There are also macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, quesadillas, and nachos too. There is just so much you can do with cheese as well as many different types. There are riccotta, parmesan, swiss, american, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, and many more! You can say that i am one of those peoples who ignore health factors too. But like i mentioned, cheese is not just my addiction but it has become a very popular addiction that many have acquired too. For example, earlier in the semester I had a guest speaker in my class trying to express his feelings towards why we should consider going vegan. He explained that the main reason why people become vegetarians instead of vegan is because of cheese and how many can not let go of this product. Although, too much dairy can be bad and lead to health problems. According to goodelements.com, it is said that the consumption of dairy from animals is bad because often hormone, pesticide, and anti-biotic residues are present in these products which causes us to get exposed with infections and other health problems. Consuming too much dairy products has a higher risk at health problems than consuming meats. Ads do not really help in providing us this kind of information. But even though some of us may know thes factors, we ignore them and continue eating the foods we love. It is something that we have become accostumed to. It is just so hard to say no to something that tastes so great! Cheese is something that has become so popular in foods.

Super Man milk ad
Advertisements are used to grab people’s attention. It is used primarily as a way to persuade people to buy an item. Milk ads in particular use famous actors as well as athletes to attract customers. In this particular ad, Super Man is being used. He is a famous well-known “Super Hero”. We have all seen him in movies, cartoons, as well as in comic books. This ad is very catchy because of the way Super Man is being portrayed. In this ad we can picture that Super Man is a big fan of milk and must drink it daily. And if Super Man drinks milk, it must be good. Therefore, it makes customers believe that they should drink it too. For if you can not read the message this milk advertisements states, it says “Super, That’s how milk makes you feel. The calcium helps bones grow strong. So even if you are not from Krypton, you can have bones of steel”. It delivers the message that even if you are not from Krypton like Super Man, you can still be like him if you drink milk. You can be strong, made out of steel, and be super like Super Man. Although we all know that milk alone can make you grow big muscles like that and make you look like Super Man, is this Milk ad really false? Does it portray something it should not? The purpose of this ad as we all know is to persuade us to buy milk. But besides the great profit milk gets off of consumers, what do we as customers get in return? We get the great taste, obviously, as well as milk indeed contains the calcium that our bodies need. “Calcium is needed for muscle contraction, calcium leads to our bone structure, bone recovery, and bone health….” The less calcium we consume daily weakens our bones. We will not be able to survive without calcium. Therefore, milk ads are great. They are made to persuade the customer to buy milk. It is best for our health. It contains the “whole package” of calcium needed for our daily diets.

Pumpkin Pie
To begin, first I would like to tell you what pumpkin pie is. Pumpkin pie is a North American traditional sweet dessert. The pie consists of the following ingredients: pumpkin-based custard, op crust, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger.
During the Fall season, all you see around the grocery stores are pumpkin pies in every single table. It is a common tradition for Thanksgiving and Christmas to have pumpkin pie as your main dessert due to “Pumpkin being a symbol of Harvest time...” Customers buy pumpkin pie and into this tradition to show their holiday spirit. But have you ever wondered that besides being the symbol for Harvest time, what other significant does the pumpkin carry?
Pumpkin pie is a tradition brought by the Pilgrims, also referred as Native Americans, around the 1600s. After a long harsh winter where many Settlers had died as well as Pilgrims, the Pilgrims had a successful harvest. They survived with squash and pumpkin. Fifty three pilgrims survived. At Plymouth, to show thanks to the settlers for their help, they gave pumpkins as gifts to settlers. They then taught them the many uses of pumpkin. Fifty years later pumpkin pie was distributed among America’s first Thanks giving day. They considered it to be a religious day. They gave thanks to God and amongst themselves for still being there.
After many years we have still continued this tradition. It is something that we have all become accustomed to and have adapted. Like mentioned, pumpkin pie is very significant in the Fall season. It was brought by Native Americans and helped them survive. It was also used in the first Thanksgiving ever. Now why have we as people have we adapted to this tradition and why is it important to show holiday spirit? We mainly do this because pumpkin is traditionally used for Thanksgiving. We show our spirit to show gratitude and appreciation for the things we have. That is the key to holidays. We all come together and give thanks to God, family, love, and happiness. For pumpkin pie helped bring two groups of people together, the settlers and the pilgrims. Without pumpkin and squash, the settlers and pilgrims would have not survived and have created the special holiday of Thanksgiving. To give is what we have learned form them. We should not be selfish and always consider our wants. We most always think of others before ourselves and always show appreciation for life.

Food Traditions and Rituals
Your article about the manju is really interesting. Although I have only tried rice cakes before and they are really good, I just never imagined the belief behind it. Every culture has their own beliefs on certain types of food. The only thing to do is just respect one anothers traditions because some people are really strong believers about certain things. The things people eat and belive about the food can sometimes be because of religion.
But even though some things may seem awkward to us we shouldn't judge other cultures.
Now about the eel water, I have never heard of eel water before. I dont know much about what has vitamins and what does not. It is crazy though about how it is also believed it will help produce children and how it works as a sexual enhancement. I have really never heard of such things only about products people publicize on TV commercials and stuff they use in stores which who knows if they really works. It's kind of funny to me to hear about those things in TV. The things on TV sound false. But the eel water it's more natural it's cool how it is proven to work. Maybe it would help if more people knew about it so it can help those who have difficulties producing.

Food Coloring

That is so true about how we define flavors with colors. Society is just acustomed to each of these colors pertaining to each of the different flavors. Like how you mentioned yellow=lemon and so forth. I believe that a lot of people would feel disgusted eating chocolate icecream and its not brown but yellow. I think even myself would feel weird trying something new because we are so used to those colors meaning certain flavors. It's just the way we are made to believe.Everything is labeled in colors. Another example how we use colors to indicate stuff and have meaning is with traffic lights. Red means stop. Yellow means slow down. Green means go. Imagine if the colors for traffic lights changed and each one had their own meaning? It would cause a lot of problems. It would probably cause more car accidents. People would be confused. Another way we out meaning to colors is by using them to express how we feel. for example when people say "I'm blue", they use the color blue to signify they are sad. Yellow means happy. Even for when it comes to roses we use color to give meaning. I believe yellow was for just friends and red is for love. Each different color rose has its own meaning. When it comes to defining sex we use colors. For instance, blue is for boy and pink is for girl. Imagine if it ws the other way around? Imagine if the meaning of colors changed? the world would go mad!

The many uses of Rice
Recently I learned that there are about 40,000 varieties of rice in the world! Some of the types of rice that are produced in the United States are long grain rice, medium grain rice, short grain rice, sweet or waxy rice, aromtaic rice, jasmine rice and many more. Examples of differrent forms of rice include rough rice, brown rice, regular milled white rice, parbroiled rice, and precooked rice. What amazes me of rice is in the variety of ways it is cooked as a savory dish.In many cultures rice is an important part of their meal. They must always have rice when having dinner. rice has become so popular that you could always find it in many restaurant menus. It brings a lot of cultures together.
In the Mexican culture rice is very sifnificant to us. But before talking about in what ways it is significant, I would like to give you a brief background of how it was introduced to Mexico. rice was first introduced to the Mexican culture through the Philippines. The Philippines transported rice to Acapulco. It became so popular that the Spaniards later found tropical climate of Veracruz region of Mexico to be the ideal place to grow rice.
Many might know rice as just simply a savory dish but it is also used in desserts, cakes, vegetable puddings, tamales, atoles, and the most popular drink known in Mexican culture, Horchata. I love Horchata! It's my all time favorite drink. For those who do not know what horchata is, it is a cold drink made of rice, almonds, cinammon, lime zest and sugar. Even though it has a milky look, it is completely dairy free. Horchata has been used to also make flavored horchata ice cream bars. We use rice in almost everything!
Another example of how rice is used is to make Arroz con Leche. Arroz con leche is known as rice pudding. It is a Mexican classic dessert. The way my family makes this dessert is by using the following ingredients: rice, cinammon, sugar, carnation, vnailla extract, raisons, and ground cinnamon on top for an extra topping when it's all done and ready to eat. But not only is rice used to make food, it is also used in traditional Mexican weddings.
In Mexican weddings, it is a tradition that in the day of the wedding the family goes eat breakfast at the bride’s home. After the reception, rice is thrown at the newly weds. It is said that this tradition was first originated by the Aztecs. The reason for this is because in the Mexican culture it is believed that by throwing rice at the newly weds it will keep the evil spirits away. Many people are strong believers when it comes to spirits. Also, by throwing rice it is suppose to bring your marriage good fortune. For these reasons, this is why rice is very significant in the Mexican culture. It is just used in so many ways! .

Hot Chocolate
Hot chocolate is also known as hot cocoa. It is a heated beverage that consists of shaved chocolate or cocoa powder, heated milk or water, and sugar. Hot chocolate is found in many places such as bakeries and grocery stores. It is very popular during Winter time because it makes a nice drink when trying to keep warm. It is also used for holidays. Up to present day today, hot chocolate is made in a variety of different ways. It is famous through out Europe and made differently than the original hot chocolate we mostly know here in the U.S. But where did hot chocolate originate from? It is said that hot chocolate came from the Aztec culture and has had many changes ever since.
In Mexican culture the two most popular hot chocolates made are hot chocolate with Ibarra chocolate and champurado. Ibarra chocolate is Mexican sweet chocolate disks. It is over a pound of chocolate which has been pressed with ground cocoa bean and cinammon. The way you use it to make hot chocolate is just by boiling your milk and putting pieces of the hot chocolate in the boiled milk, stir it into the chocolate melts. The amount of chocolate put into your drink is based on how much chocolate you like. You can purchase Ibarra chocolate in any nearby grocery store. Champurrado is a traditional Mexican drink. People refer to it as a Mexican hot chocolate. It is flavored with anise and piloncillo. It is a warm thick drink that also contains masa harina (Hominy flour). It is a very popular drink during Christmas season. Champurrado is served with tamales during Christmas time. It is also a popular drink served with churros.
There’s also a belief in the Mexican culture about Champurrado. My grandma told me that a lot of people believe that Champurado is good for hangovers. It sounds pretty funny and weird but people say it actually works. For example, if you get carried away with drinking and vomit the whole next morning, my grandmother said it’s good to drink a Champurrado. People say because the fact that it’s a really thick liquid containing masa that the masa settles the alcohol down to your tummy so you are able to eat without having your body reject the food. Therefore you are able to balance out the alcohol with the food and you start to feel much better. Because many times after a hangover many cant eat because your body is weak and rejects it. But it is said that Champurrado helps and solves the problem right away.
It's amazing how over the years hot chocolate has transformed in many names now referred to many different names based on culture. One thing in common with hot chocolate in all cultures is that it is used a lot during the holiday season and make great drinks for bringing family together.
